back (Franz Josef Glacier)
Franz Josef - Wanaka 02 March

Because we had been on the helihike in the morning we didn't have much time for stops along the way -
but since we'd driven this route before, it was not that important.
We stopped somewhere along the coast, on top of the cliffs but with a nice view of the beach at Ships Cove. We had a quick lunch there and travelled on to Haast. Just a short stop at the petrol station - where we also bought an ice cream - in Haast. On the way from Haast to Makaroa we decided to have a walk, in order to get out of the car for a while.

We stopped at the walk to "Blue Pools" and followed the track. It's a gentle walk through lush forest and over a long swingbridge ;-) and some boardwalks. The Blue Pools are really incredibly blue. We did not spend much time but I wished we didn't have to hurry - it must be wonderful to swim in this crystal clear water.
Once again we passed Makaroa, Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka before we arrived in Wanaka in the afternoon. We walked to the lake shore and along the lake shore before we looked for a nice restaurant for dinner. We went to bed early because the next day was going to be a very long one.
